My process for this client project:
Step 1
The client approached me via a refferer with the following question:
"Hey Michelle, I got your number form {REDACTED}, and I wanted to ask you if you have any available time to illustrate something for a business i am sarting?"
"Hey Michelle, I have seen enough and so has my partner. We would be so stoked to have you design something for us. We are basically goign to be starting a Sound Design Company. " ... The Project Brief:
"The concept is this little droid like robot (similar to Star Wars Droids) just because the history of sound design is so integrated with the Star Wars movies. You will have the freedom to create the droid however you would like to - however the only request I have is that the droid should look like it fits into the Star Wars Universe and additionally has a few specific parameters that i will send through to you that aligns with the company vibe and numbering that ties into our corporate identity." Step 2
Once the project start fee was paid, I could get cracking! Firstly I analysed the client's references of different small robots he liked the look of and I did a few warm up sketches by copying the different elements I saw in these robot references. I drew them in different angles to get a better sense of what they would look like in 3D form and quickly realized this specific project would benefit tremendously from my 3D modeling skills. Step 3
I then started 3D modeling in Blender with a few different variations of possible designs until I landed on a design I was happy with. In additino to the client's references I also went and found my own references for retro style radios and sound systems as this was also mentioned in a virtual call and voice note from the client as well. After a few iterations and confirming with the client, I moved onto rendering the robot in a specific pose he would be in for the final illustration.
Step 4
Now that I had a rendered image, I could import it into my drawing software and start using the 3D model as a guideline for the fine illustrative style I was going for for the mascot logo.
Step 5
Once basic details and an initial colour block was made to get a sense of colour values and colour placement.
Step 6
And finally the client had the finished illustration in the different file formats he needed!

"Women Game Jam Africa Otter Mascot""
I was approached by one of the South Africa Women Game JamOrganisers to create a unique otter character for them to use on future social media posts and eventually also on printed materials for advertising purposes. For this project I created two variations of the otter, one full body and one upper torso one to be used in Pfrofile Pictures etc incase the organisers wanted to use a closer up version. For the design itsself I researched what otters are common across Africa ingeneral and found four different species who all surprisingly look a bit similar so I chose the African clawless otter/Cape clawless otter because they seemed to have the most recognisable fur colourisation and this would translate into a cute/cartoon style the best.
